Ocean Hackathon Kuala Lumpur (OH KL)

Launched in 2022, Ocean Hackathon Kuala Lumpur (OHKL) is the first Southeast Asian edition of the global Ocean Hackathon® initiative. Organised and funded by the Embassy of France to Malaysia, OHKL was created with the vision of driving innovation by uniting diverse communities passionate about the ocean, marine and maritime data, and digital technology.

OHKL is dedicated to harnessing the power of data and technology to tackle the critical challenges our oceans face. The event is structured by six core pillars:

Who We Are

Innovative Problem-Solving

OHKL serves as a creative playground where participants use cutting-edge technology and data-driven insights to develop impactful solutions for ocean-related challenges. Over 48 hours, teams work intensively to build prototypes with real-world applications in the marine and maritime sectors.

Collaborative Synergy

Bringing together data scientists, engineers, marine experts, conservationists, and digital innovators, OHKL fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange. This unique environment fuels groundbreaking ideas and solutions.

Supporting the Ocean Decade

OHKL aligns with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade), actively contributing to the global mission of enhancing ocean knowledge and promoting sustainability.

Empowering Entrepreneurs

Beyond problem-solving, OHKL cultivates an entrepreneurial spirit by encouraging participants to think boldly and develop solutions with real-world impact. It provides an avenue for aspiring entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas and turn them into tangible projects.

Enhancing Data Accessibility

Marine and maritime data providers play a crucial role in OHKL by improving data accessibility and usability. They actively engage with participants, offering guidance and insights to help teams unlock the full potential of ocean data.

Global Recognition

As part of the international Ocean Hackathon® network, winning teams from OHKL advance to the Grand Finale in Brest, France, where they compete on a global stage for recognition and prizes from Ocean Hackathon® Ambassadors.
